It's been an exciting semester here on the fifth floor. The renovations of Studios D and E have been proceeding well. The addition of a new 9 Gigabyte drive in CMP has alleviated many disc space problems. The increase of the library in CMP has made work in the studio much more convenient.

The Disclavier Room, which was established this semester through the efforts of Professor Heinrich Taube, offers a unique composition environment, intended primarily for Computer-Assisted Composition, and work in interactive midi applications. The official use of CAMIL as a resource for Computer-Assisted Composition was introduced by Professor Taube through his course in Algorithmic Composition. This course is a primer in his program Common Music, which is implemented in LISP, availble on a variety of computer platforms, and able to give output in several formats, including Midi, Csound, Cmix, Music 4C, CLM, RT, and CLN.

Forums and residencies by several composers, including Charles Dodge, Vinko Globokar, David McBride, and Andre Smirnov of the Theremin Institute of Moscow, have provided a rich compositional environment through the exchange of ideas on music and culture through discourse and the presentation of new pieces of music.

I've enjoyed being the editor of the EMS / CMP notes this year. Its been a rewarding experience for me. I'm very pleased with the cooperation I've gotten from faculty, staff, and students. I am willing to continue being the editor, but if anyone would like the experience of putting together the newsletter, please approach me in September.
