Over the past two years, EMS/CMP Notes has provided users of the Electronic and Computer Music facilities at the University of Illinois with a formal means of sharing information. It has been a great technical resource, offering details on computer programming, use of studio equipment, professional oportunities, and other useful data. Those of us who use this resource are all indebted to Brett Terry, who started this newsletter two years ago, acting on his own initiative. Since he left Illinois in August of this year, I have taken over the task of editing the notes. For the present time, the format of this newsletter will be largely the same as before, with anew addition called, LISTEN HEAR! This column will present the music of a different composer each issue in the form of a discography.
The featured composer for this issue is Salvatore Martirano, who's recent death has deaply saddened those who knew and worked with him. His work in computer and electronic music was among the best and most unique in the field. The world has benefited greatly from the existence of Salvatore Martirano, not only for the many compositions he left behind, but also for his work as a teacher, and for his warm, friendly personality. Part of this issue is also dedicated to Sal, through a memorial section, containing words from some of those who knew him well.
