ANALYSIS OF MUSICAL FORM

(first half of the 20th. century)

This course will cover the historical period between 1900 and World War II. It will focus on the formal structure of representative compositions in relation to their musical language and it will include five major units:

1. The demise of tonality
2. Constructive devices: Rhythm
3. Non-tonal centricity - Modes
4. Constructive devices: Timbre
5. Atonal systems

There will be two assignments involving analysis of compositions, two listening test, one creative assignment, cne original composition using techniques examined in class and a comprehensive final. There will also be a number of reading assignments to be discussed in class. Participation in the discussions will be taken into consideration in determining the final grade.

Grading policies are as follows:

                                        Weight toward the final grade
        2 assignments, 100 points @            	40%
        2 listening test, 100 points @         	20%
        1 creative assignment, 100 points	15%
        1 final examination, 100 points         25%

There will be a comprehensive Final : Thursday, May 10, 1:30 - 4:30 pm.
