MUSIC, COMPUTERS, AND GLOBALIZATION

The definition of Globalization (to make global; worldwide in scope) describes the aim of most contemporary art music. This course offers an insight into the field of computer music by giving students the opportunity to work hands-on in a major computer music lab, and shows ways in which the development of technology is facilitating the process of globalization in the arts. Both the positive and the negative impact of globalization will be discussed, keeping in mind that globalization does not have to lead to the loss of originality and creativity or the loss of regional identity.

Following are some topics which will be discussed:

• Competing tendencies in Western Music: universal language vs. regional characteristics.
• Incorporating non-Western elemnts of language and thinking in Western music.
• The impact of technology on the creation and distribution of music.
• Computer music techniques for sound synthesis and composition
• The impact of science on the arts
• Visualization of music and multimedia productions
• Sonification of complex scientific data

The grades will be based on a class projects and class participation.
