This example was done by Robert C. Maher for his doctoral dissertation in 1989. The 11 second fragment was taken from a monaural LP recording of "Sonatina for Trumpet and Tuba" by Anthony Iannaccone. The method for this separation technique is described in Robert C. Maher, "Evaluation of a Method for Separating Digitized Duet Signals", J. Audio Eng. Soc., Vol. 38, No. 12, pp. 956-979 (1990). Estimated F0 vs. time contours were used to predict the positions of harmonics, and the harmonics of each sound source were separated and resynthesized based on the F0 estimates. No attempt was made to repair harmonic collisions between the sources. The F0 contours were first estimated from the original recording using the two-way mismatch (TWM) method and then manually repaired.
